Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for Parents/Guardians
We know that navigating second-level school life can feel overwhelming at times, especially if it’s your first experience with the system. This section offers quick answers to some of the most common questions we receive from parents and guardians.
What if my young person is sick and can’t attend school?
If your young person is unwell and unable to attend school, you should notify us on the day of the absence. You can do this by:
- Logging into VSware and recording the reason for the absence
- Sending a written note in the student journal (to be shown to the tutor on return)
- Phoning the school office if the absence is likely to be extended
Please avoid using social media or informal messages to report absences, so we can ensure clear and accurate records.
How do I report a future absence (e.g. family event, appointment)?
For planned absences, please:
- Notify the school in advance via VSware
- Provide a written explanation if appropriate (e.g. medical appointment, family occasion)
Regular attendance is essential for success, and we encourage families to keep planned absences to a minimum.
Who do I contact if I have a concern?
Your first point of contact should be your young person’s Class Tutor or Year Head. For subject-specific concerns, you may also wish to contact their subject teacher.
Other key contacts include:
- Guidance Counsellor – for emotional wellbeing, subject choice, or future planning
- HSCL Coordinator – for home-school support or general queries
- SEN Coordinator – for queries related to additional learning needs
You can contact the school office on info@killorglincc.ie or 0669761168 or request a callback via the student journal.
How do I access my young person’s school report or timetable?
You can log into VSware at any time to access:
- Term reports and assessment results
Guides on using VSware are available [here ].
What supports are available for SEN (Special Educational Needs)?
Killorglin Community College provides a wide range of SEN supports, including:
- Learning support and resource teaching
- One-to-one or small group interventions
- Assistive technology and accommodations
- Transition planning and goal setting
- Collaboration with NEPS and external agencies
Families are invited to meet with the SEN team during transition or whenever a concern arises. Our aim is always to ensure that every young person is supported to reach their full potential.
When are school holidays, exams, and important dates?
You can view our Whole-School Calendar on the Calendar Tab, which includes:
- School holidays and closures
We recommend checking this regularly and marking key dates at home.
