Home-School-Community Liaison (HSCL)

The Home-School-Community Liaison (HSCL) scheme is a key part of our support system at Killorglin Community College. Our dedicated HSCL Coordinator plays a vital role in strengthening relationships between the school, home, and the wider community — because we believe that strong family-school partnerships lead to better outcomes for every young person.

The HSCL service is especially helpful for:

  • Families new to second-level education
  • Parents/guardians who may feel unsure about how schools work today
  • Families navigating challenges such as attendance, transitions, or additional needs

Our HSCL Coordinator:

  • Works directly with parents/guardians, not just students — through phone calls, home visits, or informal meetings
  • Builds trust and communication between families and school staff
  • Helps you understand your young person's progress, learning, and school life

Support for Families Includes:

  • Coffee mornings & information sessions: Informal, friendly spaces to meet other parents/guardians and hear about school topics (e.g. digital safety, study tips, wellbeing).
  • Family learning workshops: Opportunities to take part in short courses (literacy, numeracy, cooking, craft, tech, etc.) in a relaxed, no-pressure setting.
  • One-to-one support: If your young person is finding school difficult, the HSCL can work with you to put small steps in place to improve attendance, confidence, or communication.
  • Guidance on school procedures: Explaining school policies, homework, reports, or VSware so that you feel informed and empowered to support your young person.
  • Connections to local services: The HSCL can help connect you with helpful community supports such as youth services, mental health supports, family resource centres, or adult education programmes.

New to the School? You're Not Alone.

Transitioning to post-primary can feel like a big leap — especially if it’s your first experience with the system. Our HSCL Coordinator is here to walk with you, explain what’s ahead, and help make the process as smooth as possible. You’ll have someone to talk to, ask questions, and work with in a respectful and understanding way.
