LGBTQ+ Inclusion at KCC
Our Journey Towards LGBTQ+ Inclusion
Since 2023, Killorglin Community College has proudly embarked on a journey to strengthen our culture of inclusion and support for LGBTQ+ students. As part of this commitment, we participated in the LGBTQ+ Quality Mark, a national accreditation programme developed by Belong To to help schools become safer, more inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ young people.
In 2024, we were officially awarded the LGBTQ+ Quality Mark, recognising the school’s progress in creating a culture where every student is respected, supported, and free to be themselves.
Why the LGBTQ+ Quality Mark Matters
The Quality Mark isn’t just a certificate — it’s a living commitment. Achieving it shows that KCC is a school where inclusion is embedded in everyday life. It also ensures that we continue to grow by focusing on:
Key Milestones So Far
We are proud of the progress that led us to achieving the Quality Mark in 2024:
Inclusive Policies
Our Anti-Bullying Policy, Code of Behaviour, and SPHE curriculum have been updated to reflect LGBTQ+ needs and language.
Staff Training
All teaching and non-teaching staff have completed LGBTQ+ awareness and inclusion training.
Visual Representation
Displays around the school, including our entrance hall, celebrate LGBTQ+ identities, families, history, and culture.
Student Voice & Belonging
A dedicated LGBTQ+ student group meets regularly for peer support and to organise awareness initiatives.
Stand Up Awareness Week
Held annually in Term 2, this week features activities, workshops, and discussions to promote understanding and allyship across the school.
Meet Our LGBTQ+ Support Team
Led by Vera Kerrisk, our LGBTQ+ Quality Mark Coordinator, this team works closely with students, staff, and parents to embed inclusion across every aspect of school life. They also collaborate with national organisations like Belong To to ensure our practices are informed, effective, and evolving.
Join Us
At Killorglin Community College, we believe every student deserves to be seen, heard, and valued. Our ongoing commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion is part of a broader promise: to lead with care, grow with purpose, and support every learner to thrive.
