Student Council: Empowering Students, Creating Change

Ag Cumasaigh Daltaí, ag Cruthaigh Athrú

“Members of the democratically-elected student council used their role to advocate for the general student body. The value attached to their voice was very clear in the decision to undertake a large-scale project to secure the quality mark for LGBTQ+ inclusion.”
Whole School Evaluation Report, Department of Education (2025)

Student Voice & Leadership

At Killorglin Community College, every student has a voice — and that voice deserves to be heard. The Student Council is the main structure through which students express ideas, raise concerns, and lead meaningful change. Elected by their peers, council members work in partnership with staff and management to shape the life of our school.

Student Council Highlights

Our Student Council is proactive, inclusive, and always striving to make Killorglin Community College the best it can be. In recent years, council members have:

  • Created a student-led music group to foster connection, performance, and creativity.

  • Partnered with the Green Schools Committee to introduce a Re-Turn bin and fundraise for environmental projects.

  • Worked with staff to review policies and secure the LGBTQ+ Belong To Quality Mark.

  • Led major campaigns like the Golden Laurels and the Attendance Campaign, celebrating student success and commitment.

  • Hosted Monthly Drop-In Clinics to gather feedback and ideas directly from students.

  • Acted as Ethos Ambassadors, promoting inclusion, kindness, and respect throughout the school.

Our Voice in Europe

The Student Council doesn’t just make an impact locally — it also represents Killorglin Community College internationally. Recently, members travelled to Brussels on an Erasmus+ leadership mobility, where they:

  • Visited the European Parliament, House of European History, and Parlamentarium.

  • Met with MEP Billy Kelleher to discuss youth voice, civic responsibility, and climate issues.

  • Took part in a partner school exchange, comparing leadership and school structures.

  • Returned with fresh ideas, ready to welcome European peers to Killorglin Community College in the 2025/26 school year.

“This was an incredible opportunity. We felt heard, inspired, and more connected — not just to each other, but to something bigger.”

Why It Matters

The Student Council shows what’s possible when young people are trusted to lead: stronger student voice, a more inclusive community, and real change that benefits everyone.
