Wellbeing & Pastoral Care Staff
At Killorglin Community College, we place the wellbeing of every young person at the heart of school life. We are committed to creating a safe, supportive, and caring environment where all students feel known, heard, and valued. Our pastoral care system brings together a range of supports to help students thrive personally, socially, and academically.
Year Heads and Class Tutors
Each year group is supported by a dedicated Year Head who oversees student progress, behaviour, and pastoral care. Class Tutors meet students daily and are the first point of contact for day-to-day issues, providing continuity and support.
Student Support Team
Our Student Support Team (SST) meets regularly to monitor student wellbeing and coordinate appropriate interventions. This team includes school leaders, the SEN Coordinator, the Guidance Counsellor, the HSCL Coordinator, and Year Heads.
Guidance Counsellor
Killorglin Community College has a full-time, qualified Guidance Counsellor who supports students in three key areas:
- Personal and emotional support
- Educational and academic guidance
- Career and future planning
Students can access one-to-one appointments or may be referred by staff. The Guidance Counsellor is also involved in subject choice support and CAO preparation.
Home School Community Liaison (HSCL)
Our HSCL Coordinator works to build strong connections between home, school, and the wider community. Their role includes:
- Visiting families to build relationships and offer support
- Organising coffee mornings, family learning events, and workshops
- Supporting attendance and engagement
- Helping new families understand school routines, policies, and expectations
- Referring parents/guardians to relevant community services (e.g. health, counselling, education)
- Promoting a culture of partnership and respect between home and school
The HSCL service is a key part of our DEIS supports and aims to remove barriers to full participation in school life.
SEN and Transition Planning
We work closely with parents/guardians and feeder primary schools to support a smooth transition for students with Special Educational Needs. Our SEN team develops individual support plans and coordinates reasonable accommodations. Ongoing collaboration with families is central to this process.
School Completion Programme (SCP)
At Killorglin Community College, we are proud to be part of the School Completion Programme (SCP) — a national initiative under TUSLA that supports young people to stay in school, engage in learning, and reach their full potential.
Our SCP Project Worker plays a vital role in our pastoral care team, working closely with students, families, and school staff to provide targeted, supportive interventions.
Supports may include:
-
One-to-one mentoring and check-ins
-
Group work focused on social, emotional, or organisational skills
-
Support during key transitions, such as moving from primary to secondary school
-
Liaison with home, especially when additional help is needed
-
Collaboration with external agencies and youth services to ensure wraparound support
SCP is especially focused on attendance, participation, and retention — helping students feel connected, motivated, and confident in their school journey.
The SCP team is an essential part of our whole-school approach to wellbeing and inclusion.
